Hi, I'm Eloise, freelance writer, translator and editor. Words are my business and what I love to do. I'm endlessly curious, relish a good challenge and march proudly among the ranks of the grammar sticklers. As a language professional, my mission is to help your words and ideas stand out clearly and make you shine.
You could say I'm a linguist my birth. I was raised in Ireland, but my mother was Belgian and we spoke only French at home. As a result, I grew up bilingual in French and English. While my brain learned long ago to distinguish between the two languages, I still have a tendency to ask people to 'close the light' in English... Of course, Ireland also has two national languages, English and Irish. While I don't claim to be native speaking in the latter, I learned on my first day of school, like all Irish children, that no one goes to the toilet unless they can utter these fateful words: 'An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas?'
I've been working professionally with language since 2004, when I first started teaching English as a Foreign Language in Dublin, Ireland, Before that, I completed a BA in English and History (Trinity College Dublin) and MA in Politics (University College Dublin) and spent a year working as a billing analyst for a multinational communications company – while also moonlighting as a jazz musician.
I moved to Barcelona in 2005, where I continued to teach English, and began translating part time as I acquired fluency in Spanish. I fell so much in love with Spain that I then went on to do a PhD on the Spanish Civil War and its representation in modern Spanish literature, which I completed in January 2014. Love of a different sort brought me to the UK, first to London and now to Brighton on the south-east coast of England, where I am finally putting down roots.
I've been a writer throughout my life, beginning my first writing attempts at the tender age of 10 with some dedicated Lord of the Rings fan fiction. Since then, I have published academic papers, interviews, feature articles, and opinion pieces in online and print publications in Ireland. These include the Irish Times, GCN magazine and the academic, peer-reviewed journal Modern Languages Open. Over the past two years, I have also produced blog posts, landing page copy and case studies for businesses. When I'm not serving my clients, I'm labouring over my fantasy epic, Spinner of Shadows or beating up punch bags at a martial arts gym.
